In Florida, individuals working in the private security sector must obtain a Class D license, which is mandated by the state. This license necessitates completion of 40 hours of professional security training to comply with the regulations outlined in Florida Statutes 493. The law stipulates that any security agency offering contract services must employ licensed security guards for service provision. It is illegal for a security guard to work for a security company without holding a valid license. However, if the client directly hires and pays the salary of the security guard, a Class D license is not mandatory. The license remains valid for two years and must be renewed before its expiry to ensure uninterrupted employment as a security guard.

The Class D license program equips security personnel with essential skills for employment in private security. This comprehensive 40-hour training covers a range of topics, including access control, patrolling, ethics, terrorism awareness, fire watch procedures, responding to medical emergencies, and emergency preparedness. Upon completion of the course, graduates are eligible to apply for a Florida security license and begin their careers immediately.
